Computed tomography coronary angiography - coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is a non-invasive method for determining the condition of the heart (coronary) vessels.
This method allows for the evaluation of:
- Heart disease risks;
- Information about heart chambers, heart walls (myocardium), heart valves, pericardium, and major heart blood vessels;
Preparation for the Examination:
Patients should arrive at least 30 minutes early for preparation.
The examination is performed with a contrast agent, and an intravenous (i/v) catheter is required.

It's crucial to calm the heart rhythm before the examination; therefore, patients should bring their daily medications.
Drink 2 glasses of water before the examination.

- How to prepare for the examination?
- Do not eat for at least 6 hours before the examination.
- Prescribed medications and water intake are allowed.
Avoid beverages containing caffeine (coffee, tea, coca-cola, green tea, etc.) for at least 12 hours before the examination.
- Stop taking Metformin on the day of the examination and for 2 days after the examination. Consult your endocrinologist or family doctor about alternative therapy during this period.
- For bronchial asthma patients, it's recommended to take corticosteroids on the day of the examination to reduce the risk of possible allergic reactions.
- A controlled, stable heart rhythm with a rate below 65 beats per minute is necessary. Beta-blockers (Metoprolol, Bisoprolol, Nebivolol, etc.) should be taken in the morning.
- If the heart rate remains above 65 beats per minute in the days leading up to and on the morning of the examination, take a higher dose of regular beta-blockers on the morning of the examination, as coordinated with your cardiologist or family doctor.
- Lowering the heart rate is not necessary if the CT examination is for the left atrium and pulmonary veins.
- Blood tests are required: urea, creatinine, GFR.
- Bring previous examination results with you.
